I have to pick up my son at the airport. 한국에서도 요즘에 pick up이란 말을 한국말에 자주 섞어서 쓰죠. 공항이나 어디 놀러 갈 때 나 좀 pick up해 달라고 말하죠. 그런데 많은 분들이 누구를 데려다 줄 때도 '제가 pick up해 드리죠'라고 말합니다. 잘못된 표현이죠. 이경우 pick up 아니라 drop off를 써야 합니다. 영어에서는 pick up과 drop off가 구분되어 쓰입니다. I have to drop off my child at the school.은 우리 아이를 학교에 데려다 줘야 한다는 말이고, I have to pick up my child at the school.은 학교에 데리러 가야 한다는 말입니다. 차이점을 이제 아셨나요? pick up: 데리러 가다./데리러 오다. to stop and offer someone a ride/take passengers or freight into a car. ​drop off: 데려다 주다. ~를 ~에 떨어뜨려주다. to stop and let somebody get out of a car. pick up은 차에 태우는 이미지, drop off는 차에서 내리는 이미지를 떠올리시면 되요. Can you pick me up at the hotel? 호텔로 절 데리러 올 수 있어요? Can you drop me off at the next station? 다음 정거장에서 내려주세요. OK, I will drop you off at the airport. 오케이, 공항까지 널 데려다 줄께.
